From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Radiation treatment for pelvic-area cancer can increase women’s risks of breaking a hip later, according to a report in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Assn.

The higher risks were seen in those with anal, rectal or cervical cancer, diseases that will be diagnosed in about 30,000 U.S. women this year. University of Minnesota researchers studied 6,428 women and found that those receiving radiation for anal cancer had triple the risk of bone fractures, while those treated for cervical and rectal cancer had a 70% higher risk.
