The Mexican government has begun distributing compensation payments to relatives of some of the hundreds of women killed over the last 12 years in this violent border city, an activist said Friday.

Victoria Caraveo, of the nonprofit Women in Search of Justice, said several mothers of women killed in Ciudad Juarez since 1993 received cash from the Mexican government this week. She wouldn’t say how many women were given the aid or how much each one of them received.

Federal and state authorities announced earlier this year they were establishing a $5.6-million compensation fund.

Claudia Banuelos, a spokeswoman for the Chihuahua state attorney general’s office, confirmed that payments began this week but she declined to give details.
