The perfect recipe for sandcastles is exactly eight parts sand to one part water, although, as beachgoers know, a range of mixtures will work, physicist Arshad Kodrolli of MIT reported this week in the journal Nature Physics.
His purpose was somewhat more serious, however: trying to determine the maximum stable angle that can be used on levees and retaining walls in watery environments.
