An Afghan alleged to be a drug lord with links to the Taliban has been extradited from Afghanistan to face federal charges, authorities said.

The man, identified as Baz Mohammad, is believed to have close ties to the Taliban and other Islamic extremist groups, the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan said. Mohammad arrived in the U.S. last week, a federal law enforcement official said.

Mohammad is accused of smuggling more than $25 million worth of heroin into the U.S. and elsewhere.
