Suspected Muslim militants mounted a series of assaults in southern Thailand in which four villagers and two of the attackers were killed, the military said.

The attackers also seized dozens of guns from the houses of village chiefs and defense volunteers during about 30 attacks in Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces, along the Malaysian border. The dead included two village chiefs, ITV television reported, citing military sources.

Lt. Gen. Palangul Klaharn said government forces were pursuing the attackers.
