Disaster response

RE “A Warning Sent but Left Unheeded,” by Tim Rutten, Sept. 2: The media have done a great job of uncovering the truth about the federal government’s belated and inadequate response to the disaster in New Orleans.

Despite plenty of warnings by scientists about the weakness of the levees as reported in newspapers and on National Public Radio, by Louisiana’s congressional delegation and by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bush administration chose to ignore urgent requests for action and allocated funds for homeland security and the Iraq war.

The silver lining of the horrific situation in New Orleans may be that more of America will wake up and see the deception our government has created to fight this unnecessary war.
