Nepal’s Maoist rebels announced a three-month cease-fire in a bid to win support from political parties opposed to King Gyanendra’s seizure of power in February.

“During this period, our People’s Liberation Army will be in defensive positions,” rebel chief Prachanda said in a statement.

Nepal’s political parties said in July they would meet with the rebels to discuss joint protests against Gyanendra’s power grab but added the rebels must stop their violence first.
