Children’s $250 Cookies Aid Victims

Four youngsters looking for a way to help hurricane victims raised more than $11,000 by selling cupcakes for $50 and chocolate chip cookies for as much as $250 outside a Norwalk market.

The market was crowded Sunday morning with people wanting to help the survivors, and the bake sale organized by Riker and Dawson Jones and Thomas and Charlie Erdmann, all between 7 and 14 years old, was a way to help.

“Everybody’s been chipping in. It’s been fun,” said Riker Jones.

“It was amazing. We’ve gotten checks for so much. People have been stopping by on their bikes and in their cars,” Riker said.

The cupcakes and cookies drew donations for the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

In Cincinnati, a 4-year-old boy’s lemonade stand raised more than $1,600 for children left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

“My son just keeps saying, ‘I want this to go to the little kids who don’t have homes,’ ” said Laurie Frueh, whose son Cameron set up the stand with his siblings and cousin.

“The adults would ask the kids, ‘What are you doing with this?’ And even the 2-year-old would give the answer, ‘It’s for the people in New Orleans who don’t have homes,’ ” she said.
