Protesters Demand Reform After Election
The candidate who finished second to incumbent Hosni Mubarak in Egypt’s presidential election joined about 1,000 protesters who marched in Cairo to demand reforms.
According to official results, Mubarak received 88% of the vote. Ayman Nour, who came in second with 7.3%, joined protesters who denounced the election results as fraudulent and called Mubarak’s rule “void.”
Some bystanders joined the protest march. Police did nothing to restrict the protesters. They kept away a smaller group of pro-Mubarak demonstrators.
A group of independent monitors said the official turnout figure, 23%, was probably too high.
