Upgrades to boost boating

THREE local waterways will get nearly $12 million in improvements to promote boating in Southern California.

The state Department of Boating and Waterways Commission approved the loans and grants Aug. 26. The money comes from gas taxes that boaters pay.

On the to-do list:

* Dana Point Harbor Marinas -- $3.7 million to rebuild 240 berths in the east marina and 500 berths in the west marina, plus gangways, new dock utilities, bulkheads and better parking.

* Long Beach Downtown Marina -- $8.12 million to improve the Shoreline Marina and the Rainbow Marina, including replacing dock utilities and gangways.

* Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park boat launch -- $100,000 to extend a pair of powerboat launch ramps, install two boarding floats and add parking, restrooms and utilities at Puddingstone Lake near San Dimas.
