Re “Gazans Burn Synagogues in Israeli Soldiers’ Wake,” Sept. 12

Israel respects the rights of all faiths to have houses of worship in the holy land. Yet the Palestinians torch empty synagogues as part of a day of “happiness and joy.” How does such behavior bolster the hope for eventual peaceful coexistence in the Middle East?

Israel’s foreign minister called the burning of synagogues by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip a “barbaric act by people who have no respect for holy sites” (Sept. 13), but the burnings are no more barbaric than the idea that an enemy’s land can be seized and new holy sites created on it.
