Lawyers Press to Halt Execution of Woman
Lawyers continued to try to stop today’s scheduled execution of a woman condemned to die for the slayings of her husband and two children.
If they fail, Frances Newton would become the first black woman executed in Texas since the nation’s most active capital punishment state resumed executions in 1982.
Newton, 40, who denies involvement in the killings, visited with relatives at the prison in Huntsville.
Her attorneys awaited word from the U.S. Supreme Court on an appeal. They also asked Gov. Rick Perry to invoke his authority to issue a 30-day reprieve.
