Fond memories of detective show

A very nice job with Robin Rauzi’s fond remembrance of “Remington Steele,” [“Following in Her Fedora,” Sept. 8] and especially her linkage of their location shoots in and about L.A. Having been born and raised here, I have a fondness for the ugly, sprawling place that transcends its many shortcomings.

My TV fixation was with “The Rockford Files” and James Garner as the ironic-iconoclastic detective, Jim Rockford. That show also did a wonderful job of showing off L.A., and since Jim lived at Paradise Cove in Malibu in a beat-up mobile home, the beach area was featured prominently too.

I just read Robin Rauzi’s delightful article and I had to tell her what lovely memories it brought back for me. I’m a few years older than her, but like her I didn’t grow up in L.A., rather Toronto, Ontario. I was always a huge fan of Southern California, and I just loved the exterior shots, knowing that someday I would visit those same landmarks. And, lo and behold, I have been most of the places shown in the series.

I want to thank Robin Rauzi. In my youth, I too was a fervent “Remington Steele” fan. I thought my passion might be singularly unique. Ah, the innocence of youth.

I would like to share my personal proof of obsession. It’s my attachment to Laura’s license plate number. I know it, still. I feel as though I’ve always know it. I’ve had my current car for almost five years. I wouldn’t know where to begin guessing at its plate number. And, if truth be told, I’m proud of this fact.
