A would-be car bomber penetrated the heavily fortified Green Zone in the center of the Iraqi capital Tuesday but was intercepted by U.S. Marines at a secondary checkpoint before he was able to detonate the vehicle, the military said.

A U.S. spokesman said the driver was arrested and the military detonated the vehicle.

The breach raised alarm about how the assailant was able to enter the most secure compound in Iraq, which houses the U.S. Embassy and the Iraqi government. Last October, two suicide bombers detonated explosives-laden backpacks in the Green Zone, killing 10 people.
