Why don’t citizens rebuild New Orleans?

Share

Re “Migrants Find a Gold Rush in New Orleans,” April 4

If one of the arguments in the current immigration debate is that illegals take jobs away from willing American workers, why hasn’t there been a flood of displaced New Orleans citizens (or other unemployed Americans) rushing back to work in the reconstruction effort of their city?

Perhaps the reality is that Americans really don’t want to work hard at those menial jobs, and instead just sit back and complain about those who do.

For the love of God, what is wrong with this country? A major city is wiped out by natural forces and governmental incompetence, hundreds of thousands of people are displaced and rendered destitute, and the federal agency overseeing rebuilding allows construction and clean-up jobs to be filled by undocumented workers rather than American citizens.

Would it be too much to ask to give the people of New Orleans the opportunity to rebuild their city and their lives?
