Bush Chief of Staff Flies Into the Sunset
The road to the White House begins in Iowa. And Iowa was an ending of sorts for outgoing presidential Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr.
A Tuesday night flight from Des Moines to Washington was Card’s last on Air Force One after traveling by President Bush’s side for more than five years. Bush was in Iowa to promote the Medicare drug program.
“My last flight on the plane, guys,” Card said as he ducked his head into the press cabin. He smiled as the reporters applauded his long tenure and quietly said, “It’s really sad.”
After serving as Bush’s chief of staff since his first day in office, Card is stepping down Friday. He resigned amid troubling times at the White House, with Bush’s approval rating at an all-time low and even some Republicans calling for a staff shake-up.
