Misusing the language

Share

Re “Choice words,” Opinion, April 12

“In the beginning was the word,” and while the truth of this biblical epigram remains a matter of faith, we all accept as axiomatic Shakespeare’s observation that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Words are more than descriptive; they are also prescriptive. Indeed, we all know from experience the power that words have to influence thinking and behavior.

Sadly, we are also witnessing how the misuse of language (spin and mendacity) can obfuscate national policy and ruin lives. Nevertheless, I do hope that someone brings Crispin Sartwell’s commentary to the attention of President Bush. This would provide one small test of the power of words.
