Music and multi-tasking

Jazz sax man Joshua Redman has achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. The son of legendary jazz man Dewey Redman, Joshua came to prominence when he won the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition.

In addition to a busy recording and performance schedule, Redman is the artistic director of the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Last month, he performed in Orange County with its adjunct San Francisco Jazz Collective, an eight-piece ensemble that he leads along with Bobby Hutcherson and Nicholas Payton.

His latest album, Grammy-nominated “Momentum,” earned critical praise for mixing live recordings with studio enhancements while remaining faithful to the spirit of jazz. This evening, he performs with his regular trio -- keyboardist Sam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade -- at USC Bovard Auditorium.
