Islam-Buddhism summit and Dalai Lama’s image
I was heartened to read the article on the summit between leaders of Islam and Buddhism (April 16). Our world situation is so divided that we need dialogue that reminds us that we are connected not just by economics but spiritually and morally as well. We all rely on Earth and each other for our survival. As the Dalai Lama has said, “If you see yourself in others, then whom can you harm?” I hope political and community leaders will join these spiritual visionaries to wake up the world to the fact that what happens to any one of us happens to us all. When we can see these connections and act in the interests of and compassion for others, the world will be a safer place for us and for future generations.

The Dalai Lama’s initiative to improve Islam’s image is commendable. However, before embarking on this noble venture, he should improve his own image, as his administration-in-exile occupies an old mosque in Dharamsala, India. The Dalai Lama has refused to entertain numerous requests to vacate the premises so that local Muslims can utilize it.
The Dalai Lama should set a right precedent by respecting the rights of the Muslim community and immediately address this issue.
