Nepal’s lawmakers proposed a cease-fire with rebels and elections for a constitutional assembly as the parliament reconvened for the first time in four years.

Parliament Speaker Chitra Lekha Yadav made the proposals on behalf of Girija Prasad Koirala, the newly named prime minister who could not attend because of ill health.

The gathering came after weeks of protests forced King Gyanendra to give up absolute power and return the Himalayan nation to democratic rule.
