Berlusconi Signals He Will Step Down

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi indicated that he would resign Tuesday, clearing the way for a government led by center-left leader Romano Prodi, who won Italian elections this month.
Berlusconi’s comment came hours after Prodi scored his first parliamentary victory: Both his nominees were elected speakers in the two houses of Parliament.
Asked when he would step down, Berlusconi replied, “The Cabinet meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday.”
