Four blasts rocked Turkey’s popular coastal region and the country’s commercial capital, Istanbul, injuring at least 22 people, a state news agency and British authorities said today.

The Anatolian news agency said three blasts occurred around the southern coastal area of Marmaris early today and a fourth in Istanbul’s Bagcilar district late Sunday.

The British Foreign Office said 10 British tourists were among those injured in the explosions. There were no immediate claims of responsibility, and authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Marmaris is a resort popular with Turks as well as Western European and Russian tourists.

The Anatolian news agency quoted Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah as saying six people were injured in the explosion in his city.

Kurdish separatists, leftists and Islamic militants have carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past.

The blasts came days after two bombs exploded in the southern city of Adana, injuring four people.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, which launched a separatist campaign in 1984, and other militant groups have been implicated in previous bombings.

The government has recently increased its troop presence in the mainly Kurdish southeast.
