Journalist Convicted of Spying Gets 5 Years

From Times Wire Reports

A Hong Kong reporter was convicted today of spying for Taiwan and was sentenced to five years in prison in mainland China, the state-run New China News Agency reported.

Ching Cheong, a correspondent for Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper, has been detained since April 2005. State media have reported that he confessed to selling military secrets to Taiwan and setting up a spy network, but his supporters say he is innocent.

Court officials declined to comment on the verdict or sentencing in the closed trial.
