A sneak peek at the Bowl’s season

ALTHOUGH the Hollywood Bowl schedule won’t be fully announced until March 8, you can get an early glimpse by going to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s website. According to an orchestra spokesman, a number of events were posted there to help past subscribers decide if they want to renew. Ditto for the information already mailed to past season ticket holders.

Lots of details and surprises are to come, the press office insists. But for those who don’t want to wait, here are a few highlights from the website:

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago -- An Arts Notes item in the Feb. 12 Calendar section about the Hollywood Bowl schedule said Hubbard Street Dance Chicago would appear there July 15. The troupe will perform at the Bowl on July 25.

John Mauceri will open his last season as music director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra with a gala June 23 and close it with a fireworks program Sept. 15 to 17. He will also lead his popular opera night on July 7 and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” July 28 to 30.

Leonard Slatkin will begin his second season as principal guest conductor of the Philharmonic at the Bowl on July 11, leading Beethoven’s Eighth and Ninth symphonies.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will share the stage with Slatkin and the orchestra July 15, dancing to the music of Bach and Mozart.

The Phil’s assistant conductor, Alexander Mickelthwate, will oversee the Tchaikovsky fireworks spectaculars Aug. 11 to 12 and, even better, lead Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony on Aug. 31.

John Williams will lead a “Music of the Movies” program Sept. 1 and 2. Other guests scheduled to step onto the podium are George Daugherty, Andrew Davis, Nicholas McGegan, Bramwell Tovey and Edo de Waart.
