In the Feb. 19 front-page article about his struggle to gain recognition in the film industry, Tyler Perry recalls how a Hollywood studio executive said that black people don’t go to the movies.

Apparently Hollywood execs don’t believe anyone east of Hollywood is worthy of major announcements for an opening weekend, because scanning the ads in the Sunday paper, one can see the “Starts Friday” banners for Westwood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Century City and other upscale locales. There is no mention of anything close to the wastelands of Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena, probably because they must think anyone who chooses to live there obviously has no sense of art or culture.
