Re “War in the Information Age,” Opinion, Feb. 23

Bigger and better spin control will not convince increasingly skeptical Americans or long-incredulous citizens of the world that the war in Iraq is a vital “battle in which the survival of our free way of life is at stake,” as Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld continues to insist. Free people all over the world have already been exposed to sufficient information to find their way to the truth: Rumsfeld’s arrogance, disregard for life, duplicity and incompetence helped pave the way to unnecessary war. Bigger and better spin control will not change this fact nor the minds of the world’s free-thinking citizens.

I found Rumsfeld’s Op-Ed article frightening to say the least. He is basically calling for everyone to get in line and support the administration’s agenda, which is based on lies, while stating, “Ultimately, the truth wins out.” This is exactly why we need a free, unbiased media and an educated citizenry. One can’t help but think that Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels is applauding Rumsfeld’s piece from the grave.

“The growing number of media outlets in many parts of the world still have relatively immature standards and practices that too often serve to inflame and distort rather than to explain and inform,” Rumsfeld writes. So Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia now receive Fox News?
