A form of vitamin B3 called nicotinamide can reverse most of the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome in mice, and the findings may be applicable to humans, researchers from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University reported in the journal Public Library of Science Medicine.

The compound protects areas of the brain affected by alcohol. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation in the western world, affecting one in 1,000 births.
