A Snowboarder Shows Off? Shocking!

“The Biggest Bungle Since Buckner” screamed the headlines. “American Girl Blows Gold by Showboating,” said another. “Snowboarder Embarrasses U.S. Team,” wrote the columnists. And on and on it went, stories about the young woman who would have/should have won her Olympic event had it not been for a silly move nearing the finish line.

Talk about your memorable moments in the history of sport ... who among us will ever forget what’s-her-name?

How dare she! How dare Lindsey Jacobellis put her enjoyment of a sport she initially got involved in because it was fun ahead of America’s national pride! What was she thinking? How could she disgrace us like that?

I think the criticism of Lindsey Jacobellis for showboating totally misses the point. It is the reason that snowboarding has rescued an otherwise stale, status quo Winter Olympics. We love the risk-taking X Gamers for putting some spontaneity and originality into the Games.

So, if it cost her the gold medal, so be it -- it’s the price you have to pay for taking some risks and shaking things up.
