Iran Begins Talks With Russia on Fuel Plan
Iran and Russia began talks Saturday on Moscow’s proposal that the two nations enrich uranium in Russian territory, days after Tehran said it needed to clarify “ambiguities” in the offer, state-run television reported.
The Russian proposal, backed by European nations and the United States, is aimed at getting Iran to move uranium enrichment out of its territory to ensure that its nuclear program cannot produce weapons. Enrichment can produce either fuel for a nuclear reactor or material for a warhead.
A top Russian delegation held talks with Iranian officials about the proposal, said the spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Hossein Entezami, according to the TV report. The council is Iran’s highest security decision-making body.
Meanwhile, inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, arrived in Tehran to remove seals from nuclear research facilities. Iran told the IAEA last week that it would resume nuclear fuel research Monday, a step that has increased concerns in the West that Iran is moving toward producing nuclear arms.
