Celebrate Mozart, live from Salzburg

The first live broadcast in the Southland of a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic will highlight a three-day Mozart radio celebration from Salzburg, Austria, the composer’s birthplace, to be carried on KMZT-FM (105.1) on Jan 25-27. The program is part of the events marking the composer’s 250th birthday.

Riccardo Muti will conduct the Vienna ensemble beginning at 9 a.m. PST on Jan. 27. The soloists will include pianist Mitsuko Uchida, violist Yuri Bashmet, soprano Renee Fleming and baritone Thomas Hampson.

At intermission, more than 100 churches in Salzburg will ring their bells at the exact time of the composer’s birth. KMZT will repeat the concert at 5 p.m.

The three-day radio festival begins at 9 a.m. Jan. 25 with performances by the Camerata Salzburg, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Juilliard and Hagen quartets.
