Hiring day laborers is risky business

Hiring day laborers and unlicensed contractors is an invitation to financial disaster. Many believe that as individuals, they are exempt from labor laws. They are not, and if you hire a day laborer, you are the employer of record. All workers are entitled to a safe workplace, and even undocumented immigrants are protected.
Injury claims could force you to hire an attorney, and don’t look to your homeowner’s insurance policy to cover you. It will not insure you for illegal acts (hiring undocumented workers and not complying with all applicable state and federal labor laws).
