This was the castle of the citrus kings

The fragrant scent of orange blossoms once wafted around this Craftsman/Colonial Revival manor, which citrus grower F.L. Bartholow built nearly a century ago. More than 1,200 orange and lemon trees shared the 10-acre property with the house in a community then called Etiwanda, now a part of the city of Rancho Cucamonga.

It has been home to three of Etiwanda’s early families.

Bartholow, a charter member of the Etiwanda Fruit Co., packed fruit under the “Quail” label, according to a Rancho Cucamonga city planner’s report. He and his wife, Clara, lived in the house until 1928, when Charles and Gertrude Woods purchased it.

Woods made his mark in Etiwanda history selling water rights essential to growth in the community. The next owners, the Riley family, nearly doubled the number of citrus trees and were growers for what is now the Sunkist Co. They were the owners until 1947.
