On America’s obsession with the supersized

Re: “Get the Message?” [Jan. 2]: America’s obesity epidemic is the result of a national spiritual (not religious) void that is further exemplified by our dependence on unnecessary prescription medications, Whoppers, behemoth SUVs and a general feeling that more is always better. Got diabetes? Forget the daily walk and take a pill. Why own a smaller and more efficient automobile when one can afford much more? “I don’t have the time for anything but a fast-food lunch!” The litany goes on ad infinitum.

The idea that a government PR campaign can significantly change the eating habits of America is, at best, an illusion. Only a dedicated commitment to change built upon personal responsibility, minding one’s own business, moderation and self-discipline will achieve the desired results.
