2003 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile ‘Super Oakville Red’

Share

Sangiovese, the grape that makes such superb wines in Tuscany, hasn’t had as great a track record in California. But the 2003 Aprile from Gargiulo Vineyards in Oakville is a rousing success. This “Super Oakville Red” is 96% Sangiovese, the rest of the blend being Cabernet Sauvignon in the tradition of super Tuscans.

The surprise is that this Napa Valley red delivers on Sangiovese’s promise. It has such impressive structure and depth, close your eyes and you could easily be drinking a $50 Tuscan vino da tavola. There’s a tantalizing scent of anise and herbs, and the taste of black cherries. Bravissimo!
