Mourning Tracy Thielen

The scene is in a funk over the loss of musician Tracy Thielen, the frontman of Tracy and the Hindenberg Ground Crew. The underground artist, poet and musician died at 43 of a drug overdose on June 20, and those familiar with his work and humor knew him to be one of a kind. Both a prankster and a gentleman, he produced spoken-word records for Viggo Mortensen, Exene Cervenka and John Doe and released quirky, iconic albums on his own Action Box Records. Thielen’s pal Quentin Tarantino is expected to be among the mourners at a memorial service scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Church in Hollywood. In a city filled with acquaintances, Tracy Thielen was a friend.

DJs and mariachis

Some establishments completely change their character when they change hands. But the latest downtown L.A. bar to get new ownership, the venerable tejano bar La Cita, is more likely to turn into a cultural cocktail. The Grand Central Market-adjacent bar on Hill Street will keep its Saturday night and Sunday afternoon dance clubs with mariachi bands and offer DJ music Mondays through Fridays. “A friendly atmosphere and a mix of cultures -- that’s what we’re going for,” says Carl Lofgren, who along with Dave Neupert and Pete Lenavit got the keys to the place last week. Lofgren and Neupert have been involved with hipster havens the Short Stop, Footsies and the Scene.... Hollywood heavyweight Rick Calamaro (Nacional/Ivar/Holly’s) is expanding to Santa Monica with Holly’s West, the swanky sister club to his trendy Hollywood nightclub. Holly’s West makes its official debut Saturday.
