Two sides to Mencia’s banter

Share

I was so glad to see your article on Carlos Mencia [“He’s on PC Patrol,” by Jay Fernandez, July 12]. I’m an actor and have had the good fortune to be in a couple of sketches on the show. The first thing that struck me about Carlos was how hard he works at what he does. We rehearse and rehearse and he’s always looking for ways to make it better, funnier!

The article may have implied that he has an arrogance about him, but I didn’t find this to be the case. Confidence is more like it. He knows what’s funny and exactly who his audience is.

IF only Mencia’s mind was as clever as he seems to think it is. Mencia knows why he’s so funny and he’s not shy about revealing his secret. It’s because he dares to say out loud what everyone else is already thinking. Really? Well, there’s a word for that kind of comedy: obvious. And obvious just ain’t that funny.

Or how about these two words: impulse control. Not everything that comes into your mind needs to come out of your mouth. We teach our children not to tease the fat kid because, while it may be funny, it’s not kind. That’s not being politically correct; it’s being civilized. Mencia should try it sometime.
