If you can’t afford a home security system, there are some other ways to discourage break-ins. According to the Insurance Information Institute and other groups, using light and concealing valuables are two excellent ways to protect your property. Some suggestions:

* Install exterior lighting with motion detectors and timers at entrances and in dark, remote areas.

* Trim shrubs and trees back from walkways and windows. If left to grow, these can be good areas for thieves to hide in.

* Use locks. Don’t leave entry doors and garage doors open or unattended. Padlocks on gates and sheds, and safety locks on windows and doors, also act as deterrents.
