The air force bombed areas held by Tamil Tiger rebels, including an unfinished runway and a camp, killing five guerrillas. The latest violence puts Sri Lanka at risk of returning to a full-scale war.
Tensions were also high over an alleged rebel blockade of a key source of water for government-held villages in the northeast.
