From Times staff and wire reports

Several major California cities were ranked among the most at risk for natural disasters in a recent comparison of 50 U.S. communities.

The list, devised by the Web resource Sustain Lane and based on its own research and that of Risk Management Solutions, looked at the potential frequency and extent of hurricanes, flooding, hail, tornadoes and earthquakes.

Based on these criteria, the cities with the greatest natural disaster risks -- in descending order -- are Miami, New Orleans, Oakland, San Francisco, Honolulu, San Jose, Los Angeles, Houston and Long Beach.
