How to go about judging the judges

Re “Guesswork Is the Norm When Voting for Judges,” May 28

The Times talks about all the uncertainty but fails to mention all the resources available to find out about judges. People say they never know anything about the judicial candidates, but there are resources available to help.

The Los Angeles County Bar Assn. conducts investigations into each candidate and rates them. Those ratings are posted on www.lacba.org. In addition, the League of Women Voters allows the candidate a free web page at www.smartvoter.org.

Candidates often have their own websites, which can be found by running a simple search using the candidate’s name. Finally, The Times (as well as others) investigate the candidates before making endorsements.

Those of us who vote regularly are well aware that making an informed decision about judges is virtually impossible. Instead of expounding the obvious, why not publish some information about judges so we can make a reasonable decision?

Are the candidates soft or hard on first-time offenders? How tough are they on repeat offenders? What do reputable attorneys think about them? What do people who work in the courtrooms think? What about court watchers?

Don’t tell me what I already know; be of some help!
