Little Sympathy for Plight of GM

Regarding “Why GM Matters” (Opinion, May 26):

Rick Wagoner, chairman of General Motors Corp., seems to want to blame globalization and healthcare and retirement costs for the situation his company is in. And yet on another page in this very same newspaper is a full-page ad for a Hummer. Does this man live on another planet?

Had General Motors been led by people of awareness and vision, and were they truly socially responsible, they might not be in the mess they are in. The most challenging issue facing life on this planet, besides overpopulation, is a climate crisis caused by global warming.

GM still produces some of the most gas-guzzling, pollution-spewing vehicles on the road. I would suggest that Wagoner’s company manufacture products that are part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Sorry, Mr. Wagoner, my next vehicle will be a Prius.

Regarding “GM Hopes $1.99-a-Gallon Gas Offer Moves Its Fuel Guzzlers” (Business, May 29):

General Motors seems to believe that $1.99-a-gallon gasoline for gas guzzlers is just what the driving public wants and needs.

Even Washington wants to keep the “cheap” oil flowing; otherwise, America would have a meaningful national energy policy and would vote no on Arctic drilling and yes on conservation.

The best gasoline deal can be found in Washington. There our taxes pay to support the butts of the elected riding in super limousines, the biggest gas guzzlers of all. If oil resources were infinite, I might not care that Washington was corrupted by oil and transportation interests.
