The Police Commission approved a policy Tuesday that doubles the time that illegal immigrants can be held in city jails for pickup by federal immigration authorities.
Commission President John Mack said the extension, from 24 to 48 hours, does not affect a separate policy prohibiting officers from asking suspects and others about their immigration status.
“This commission is not sanctioning or adopting a policy that is going to turn Los Angeles police officers into immigration agents. That’s not the department’s job,” Mack said.
