Florida gov. gets a marriage bargain

Share

June 24, 1949: When Florida Gov. Fuller Warren, 43, escorted his fiancee, Barbara Jeanne Manning, into the Hall of Records to apply for a California marriage license, he got a happy surprise, The Times reported.

The license cost just $1.

“That’s $1 cheaper than we charge in Florida -- I believe,” said Warren, who The Times said was “reportedly driven to more than ordinary economy of late by a penurious Legislature.”

Warren, twice divorced, met Manning, “a demure, brown-haired legal secretary of 23,” the previous year while he was in Southern California for a citrus conference, the newspaper said.
