Austrian authorities said they might allow hunters to shoot a marauding brown bear nicknamed Bruno after recent efforts to capture him alive failed.

A spokesman for the Austrian state of Tyrol said the bear was a potential danger to humans. It has been on the loose since last month, when it ambled into Germany -- the first wild bear seen there since 1835.

Authorities in the German state of Bavaria were contemplating organizing a hunt if the bear reappeared in Germany, a spokesman said.
