A trial that could determine the fate of the state’s $3-billion stem cell research initiative concluded Thursday in Alameda County Superior Court, but the judge will not issue a ruling until later this month at the earliest.

Opponents contend that the institute, which voters created in November 2004, is unconstitutional because it operates without direct state control.

Although they had planned to call 73 witnesses, in the end they called only Robert Klein, the force behind Proposition 71 and now chairman of the institute’s oversight committee.

The state attorney general’s office countered with its own witnesses, who testified to strict oversight by the state’s treasurer and controller.
