Santa Barbara growth goes coastal

Share

So Santa Barbara’s insistence on slow growth is resulting in some negative effects, such as air pollution, traffic congestion and soaring housing costs (March 6).

It should just take the brakes off development altogether, like Los Angeles did. We don’t have any of those problems here.

I am dismayed that there is not a single mention in this article about a local coastal plan. Negotiated between the California Coastal Commission and local municipalities, such a plan spells out in detail appropriate future development within a coastal zone. If a proposed project complies with the applicable plan, I don’t see any reason for the exceedingly long and drawn-out battles described in the article. That is exactly the kind of problem such plans are supposed to avoid.
