A banner day for immigrants
Re “Flag’s Meaning Is in the Eye of the Beholder,” March 29
It is disingenuous to compare our current immigration situation with the immigration booms of the previous two centuries. Yes, the new immigrants serve the same economic exploitation function as the immigrants of the past, but our current crisis is much more than an economic struggle. How enthusiastic to assimilate into American culture do you suppose the Irish would have been if New York and most of the Eastern Seaboard had been part of Ireland and torn away from them in a questionably illegal war? Those Mexican flags we saw carried in the demonstrations were symbolic of much more than the Irish’s quaint St. Patrick’s Day nostalgia and pride for the old country.

Why would immigrants who are trying to persuade the citizenry and their representatives to allow them to remain in the United States wave large Mexican flags and “Viva Mexico” signs? It makes no sense.

Interesting how the Mexican flag is considered anti-American, yet so many self-described “patriots” (especially in red states) think the Confederate flag is just fine. At least Mexico’s flag isn’t a symbol of armed secession.
