Nations Plan Incentives for Iran to Cease Nuclear Work
Key nations are putting together a broad package of incentives for Iran to suspend uranium enrichment, Russia’s U.N. ambassador said Wednesday.
Vitaly Churkin said the approach came about after meetings Monday and Tuesday among the foreign ministers of Russia, the U.S., China, Britain, France and Germany.
Enriched uranium can provide fuel for reactors to generate nuclear energy, or material for bombs. Iran says its program is peaceful, but some Western powers suspect it seeks weapons.
Russia and China have balked at British, French and U.S. efforts for a new United Nations resolution requiring Iran to suspend uranium enrichment. That would set the stage for further measures that could include sanctions and military action.
Churkin said a revised resolution would include the package of incentives.
European officials said the package would probably include provisions for Iran to have a civilian nuclear energy program.
