Putin Sees No Return to Cold War Tension
Russia will build its ties with the West slowly and carefully and will not allow a return to a period of stand-off, President Vladimir V. Putin said.
“We will build up ties with Western colleagues patiently and calmly,” Russian news agencies quoted him as saying. “I already said that we will not return to the period of the Cold War.”
His statement came a week after Vice President Dick Cheney accused Russia of backtracking on democracy. It was Washington’s strongest criticism of Moscow since Putin came to power in 2000.
