Iraqi girl’s situation stirs emotions

Re “Helping one girl face the future with hope,” Oct. 15

The pictures of Marwa Naim hit me on several emotional levels. I teared up seeing the tragic disfigurement of that little girl. I felt a well of pride for the benevolence and skills of UCLA Medical Center and for Saad Alazzawi, who provided comfort for Marwa. And joy that she is recovering and doing what little girls should be doing.

I felt profound anger and guilt that my government invaded a country without provocation and that I helped pay for it. Six hundred thousand Iraqi civilians dead? Three hundred thousand? Or maybe “only” 100,000. And for every death probably five to 10 wounded like Marwa.

What have we wrought and for what reason? And who among us really cares or accepts responsibility?
